"Elevator Nerves"
People, audiences, groups, parties and other public places with humans create a nervous buzz for some individuals. It’s funny for those who are claustrophobic or just feel intimidated by others around them tend to hear things in a different way. The beat of a keychain being played with while in an elevator or waiting in line suddenly becomes louder to the point where it will become frightening to someone. The focus closing in on what the individual hears and feels as if someone has turned the senses into superhuman, at times certain things go into slow motion.
At first when entering the elevator there appears to be one person, completely fine but then again there are seventeen other floors. The elevator stops at two floors, a break in between each one with a nice silence with the deep grown of doors opening which sound like a hollow whales call. Then the nerves start to build as the first stop allows two people to enter then the second to add four individuals who appear to be slightly rowdy. The child that entered on the first stop starts to sway against the wall, hands of course sticky with some goo and start to squeak. However, since the senses start to become more accurate the sounds slur so the boys hands annoy to the point of a poorly tuned violin. The elevator descends but the boys’ hands annoy to the point where they somehow become louder. Without noticing the elevator made another stop which allowed another four to pile onto the somewhat small elevator. The only comforting sound comes from the women’s earrings to the left apologizing for her bag running into you because of the businessman pushing his way in. The only problem of course the gentle chiming of the earrings drowns out due to the kids’ hands, two teenagers tapping fingers on the railing in the back, and the hum of the elevator. Then noticing the actions creates an increase of dizziness combining perfectly with the elevators hums making the temperature go up along with the noises. Concentrating on anything but the increase of the heartbeat, the whirring of the elevator, the kids’ hands, the tapping, and then everything stops. Shoppers, workers, kid and whoever leaves; the second to last sound heard are human voices. Before, the voices never occurred to the crammed individual next to the chatting woman or the kid. Of course the last thing heard is the heart trying to regain confidence, but then the walk out of the elevator turns into another fear.
